Several years ago, a Christian lady up in years, who had been part of a team of Christian ladies traveling across the US giving encouraging talks made the announcement she would be leaving the team. But she looked at as a promotion - moving on to whatever was next in life vs. retirment or being put out to pasture. We are in the process of selecting elders and several are older and will not serve for the next 4 years. I wish they could see it as a positive, moving on, promotion, graduation, time to do what God has prepared them for at this time of their lives and not a demotion. They do not lose their identity when they no longer serve as an elder. They are still first of all Christian and that does not end.

I agree. And I appreciate so much your part in bringing this congregation to this point. WF is going through a process they go through every 4 years where all the elders are looked at we write down the names of each man (new and old) we want to serve in this role for the next 4 years. Your lessons have been so very good about the qualities of Godly Shepherds! Thank you!!!

You are SO right! I remember the great theologian, Mark Johnson (of BMBC fame), saying in class one day, "If you... (something, something, something...), then you can't seek the what. You've got to seek the Whom." In our words we speak so much about "eternity with You," or whatever. But I wonder if it's our physical minds that can't fathom actually spending ETERNITY with THE CREATOR OF ALL. Maybe since it's easier to talk about going heaven, that's the goal we've talked ourselves into.

Thanks for exposing this incredible truth.

This post calls to mind a collect from the Book of Common Prayer:

Blessed Lord, who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning; Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience and comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace, and ever hold fast, the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen

I think that patience is sometimes the most difficult part of listening to God. As with a friend of family member, when we ask a question about something important, we want an answer immediately or soon. But sometimes the best answers are the ones worth patiently waiting for. Thanks for this post . . . I've been frustrated lately with myself and God, asking, asking, asking, and I haven't been patiently waiting for my answers or silently listening for a response. Needed a reminder. :)

Mitch, that book is called The Leadership Handbook (or something like that) by Dr JJ Turner. I read it for a class at Sunset. Highly recommend it along with They Smell Like Sheep.
God bless you Mitch. Keep preaching the word and making disciples. Grace and Peace.

Mitch, the mayhem commercials are for Allstate.
I completely agree. Relationships are the key to a successful business and church. Relationships go way beyond just knowing someone's name, but knowing about them as well. I hope to see churches as dynamic as in the book of Acts, where no one considered their possessions as their own. They gave to those who had a need.
Thank you for the reminder Mitch! God bless you, your family, and the work y'all are doing. Grace and Peace.
